The City of Pflugerville hosted its second annual Pfreeze Pflop on New Year’s Day at Scott Mentzer Pool. A total of 65 participants turned out to slide into chilly pool waters, believed to be in the mid-40s. Honoring those at ‘Russel’s Place’

Bertha Russel lit a candle with Derick Cairo while surrounded by signs honoring those buried in the cemetery off Pecan Street in the section founded as the “Pflugerville Colored Addition". Students in the Pflugerville Middle School Advancement Via Individual Determination class have adopted the cemetery and spent hours this school year cleaning and revitalizing it under the direction of Virginia Avalos. AVID students (holding the signs) and Avalos led a rededication of the cemetery Feb. 16, which included a ceremony celebrating Black History Month, a walk to honor those buried there, and the unveiling of a sign reading “Russel’s Place to Rest,” honoring the cemetery’s other name.
